The speciality tea world needs a serious shake-up

Back in 2012, armed with a few sharpies, a stash of foil bags, and the occasional hand-stitched tea bag, Brew Tea Company started redefining what ‘good’ tea should be. We wanted to make tea more inclusive, to demystify it, raise the bar and give our drinkers an awesome experience every time.

Fast forward a few years, the team has grown from two to 24, we moved Tea HQ from Liverpool to Manchester, but we’re still banging the same drum – tea drinkers deserve better than dusty, disappointing cups of tea. They want a quality cup, something delicious and full of flavour, and we know it. Last year, we use 35.8 tonnes of English Breakfast. To put that into context, that’s a smashing 7.16ma cups of tea.

We only ever use the freshest rolled whole leaves in our tea-based blends. These leaves are hand-plucked from the top of the plant using its newest leaves, known as two leaves and a bud. After drying, they’re left as intact as possible and gently rolled instead of chopped. The result is a smoother, sweeter cup of tea so good you might decide you don’t need milk anymore.

When making tea with rolled whole leaves, the kit matters too. There’s nothing worse than clattering, dribbling equipment undoing all the hard work you put into sourcing really good tea. Our kit is designed to ensure that brewing tea is simpler than ever before. It’s easy to use, looks fantastic and showcases those leaves as much as possible. All you need to do is add tea and water, for a cup that’s worth the wait every time.

Good tea is just the start – we believe in using business as a force for good. We cemented our commitment to doing honest business all the way along the supply chain when we became the 146th certified B Corp in the UK. B Corp is to business what a Fairtrade certification is to tea. The non-profit B Lab reviewed all our practices at Tea HQ and beyond to certify that we meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

We are also proud members of the Ethical Tea Partnership; our tea is only sourced from tea estates that have good working practices, which uphold the local union agreements and laws, as well as constantly working to improve workers’ education, wages, and working conditions. We also strive to have as many of our tea-based blends certified by Rainforest Alliance; we buy from accredited farms that control water pollution and waste, work towards safer working practices, and engage in sustainable farming practices too. To cap it all off, we certified our entire retail range with A Plastic Planet so that we can proudly sport the Plastic Free Trust mark. A win for awesome tea, and a win for the planet.
