Spanish sauces win supermarket space

Mojo Sauce has launched in Co-op and grown its distribution in Morrisons and Ocado, capitalising on the growth of Latin and Spanish cuisine in the UK.

Now available in Co-op, the young independent founded by a Leeds restaurateur and his business partner, has also expanded into 120 Morrisons supermarkets and is available nationwide via Ocado.

The two distinctive sauces, originating from a Canary Islands family recipe and now made in Yorkshire, have gained a cult following in the sauces and condiments aisle, plugging a gap for Spanish variants.

Perfect for dipping, pouring and marinating, the Great Taste award-winning Mojo Red is a sweet and smoky sauce staple, while Mojo Green trades on its garlic and fresh herbs flavour.

Founder, Seb McGowan, explains: “Mojo sauces are on the table in every household in Spain, like ketchup or mayo. They’ve been a mainstay at my restaurant, Viva Cuba, for 20 years, which convinced me I could make them work for retail with the right partners.”

Partner James Homer adds: “Our competitive pricing, unique brand and versatility of the sauces have been our key sales drivers, and we’re now forging ahead with a growth strategy that will increase our brand footprint in more supermarkets and delis here in the UK and overseas. We have developed a whole new range of mayos, sauces, rubs and complementary foods under the Mojo brand, which are ready to go.”

Friends Seb and James teamed up to develop Mojo Sauce for the supermarket shelves in 2018. In two years, it’s grown to a £100,000 business, selling up to 10,000 bottles a month. Low sugar, low salt, low carb and low fat, the vegetarian and vegan-friendly products offer a high quality, low cost alternative to traditional sauces.

The condiment market is a growth sector and is heavily trending towards healthier sauces and more international options like Mojo Sauce.
