Schär – first brand to launch FODMAP range for IBS sufferers into UK supermarkets

Schär, the UK’s most frequently bought gluten free brand is the first brand in the UK to offer low FODMAP accredited products in UK supermarkets. This news comes as 10 items from the range have been certified as being low FODMAP by Monash University, the founders of the low FODMAP diet.

A third of UK adults (32%) say they have or have had IBS, equating to over 16 million people.1,2   Of these, approximately 3 million people follow, or have followed a low FODMAP diet to manage their symptoms1,2.

FODMAPs are a collection of carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed into the gut that can trigger IBS symptoms in some people. The low FODMAP diet excludes foods that can contribute to IBS symptoms like intestinal bloating and pain.

Category Lead at Schär, Roger Harrop, comments: “We are proud to be the first brand to introduce low FODMAP certified products into UK supermarkets for customers with IBS. The certification of the 10 Schär products as low FODMAP comes at a time when consumers are increasingly recognising the role of the diet in helping to manage IBS symptoms, and as a leading food specialist for special dietary and nutritional needs, Schär is well placed to support consumers in this way.”

Alison Reid, CEO of the IBS Network says: ““Under the supervision of a registered dietitian, the adoption of a low FODMAP diet can be extremely beneficial in managing the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, (IBS). However, the diet can often be restrictive or difficult to follow so we’re delighted Schär is providing consumers with rigorously tested clearly labelled low FODMAP options to support them in managing their condition.”

Low FODMAP labelling can be found on pack to help customers clearly identify which products within the range have been certified.
