Nepenthe brings a flavour of the Adelaide Hills to the UK

Premium Australian wine brand, Nepenthe, is launching a selection of wines from its two collections into the UK – Altitude and Pinnacle – which include a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and a Shiraz.

Founded in 1994, Nepenthe wines reflect a modern Australian style with fresh fragrant varietal characters and palate texture. Rooted in the cooler climes and higher altitude of the Adelaide Hills, with its rolling peaks and misty landscapes, the Nepenthe winery champions the unique climactic elements of this fascinating region, and its wines embody the elegance and diversity of the land. The tenacity and craftsmanship of its winemakers have led to the creation of wines of exceptional quality and with a distinctive regional character.

The wines in the Altitude collection hail from the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills, and exhibit genuine varietal quality. The Altitude Sauvignon Blanc offers passionfruit and pineapple notes on the nose, complimented by a subtle tropical palate balanced by a crisp acidity – the perfect pairing for seafood or fresh goat’s cheese. The Altitude Shiraz embodies a classic cool climate style, with elegant flavours of berry and sweet spice, making it the ideal partner for lighter red meat dishes. The Altitude Pinot Noir offers fresh summer fruit flavours with subtle spice notes from oak. With a firm structure and long, savoury finish, it partners perfectly with duck.

The Pinnacle range offers small batch, boutique wines sourced from the most premium vineyards and made with the best Adelaide Hills fruit. The Pinnacle Petraea Sauvignon Blanc is a single vineyard wine, characterised by its texture, complexity and length – with ‘Petraea’ referring to the species of oak used in French wine barrels. Alongside its tropical and grassy flavours, this wine showcases the richness that is imparted from this ageing process, making it a great match for oily fish and sushi. The Pinnacle Gate Block Shiraz hails from a high altitude site in The Hills that benefits from ample sunlight to encourage concentrated flavours of fresh red berries and classic pepper notes. With firm tannins and a long, lingering finish, this wine can stand up to fuller-flavoured meats such as veal and beef.

What’s more, Nepenthe’s 2016 Pinnacle Petraea Sauvignon Blanc won the Trophy for the ‘Best Sauvignon Blanc’ at the 2017 Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits competition at the beginning of November. Nepenthe’s Sauvignon Blanc triumphed over well-regarded wines from all over the world including top entries from renowned Sauvignon Blanc regions such as France and New Zealand.

James Evers, Winemaker at Nepenthe, said: “We craft wines that reflect the provenance of our home in the cool climate, high altitude Adelaide Hills. The Hills is an inspiring viticultural region, the diverse microclimates bring complexity to our wines and challenge me as a winemaker. At Nepenthe we take a minimal intervention view on winemaking but ensure there is a human touch at every step of the process, leaving nothing to chance in the quest for quality. We believe it is this element of craftsmanship that creates the foundation of extraordinary wine. Our wines offer elegant aromatics, balanced acidity and palate texture. We are delighted to be bringing our premium, hand crafted wines to a UK audience and look forward to championing the Adelaide Hills on the international stage.”
